REVIEW: Razer Raiju

We are used to video game players enjoying the best devices being PC gamers, but why? Personally I don’t understand that we are used to invest more in devices related to computers than consoles.

If you are a person who has a great time with video games and instead of using a keyboard and mouse you use a controller, you have the same right to use the best devices. At the end of the day we spend many hours playing games because that is what we like and if we have a controller in our hands like the Razer Raiju we will enjoy our hours of gaming much more.

Therefore, we are going to analyze the Razer Raiju, one of the competitive PS4 controllers that we can find in black color, with the rear area in blue. Sober and nice looking, we should not miss the opportunity to get to know a gamepad this good, even being the first version of a series in which Razer proves that it knows what it does.

Box contents

First of all, let’s see what we are going to find if we buy one of these controllers.

The box contains a nice hard carrying case (an aspect that may not seem important, but I personally value it) so that we can take our controller wherever we want with the assurance that all components travel in good condition.

Inside the case we find the controller, a 3 meter braided fiber USB cable, 2 non-slip rubber bands for the joysticks and a small screwdriver to disassemble the rear triggers.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The non-slip rubber bands and the screwdriver are not shown in the pictures because my little cousin had the controller for a week and was kind enough to return it to me without these accessories. F in the chat by La Guía del Mando.

Buttons and Joysticks

The Razer Raiju brings with it some improvements that are what define a competitive controller and among the most important are the buttons and joysticks, so let’s review what this gamepad has in store for us.

First of all, the button presses are developed by the company with a technology called Razer Hyperesponsive, which provide a high-end machining with a much finer press than the original controller and with less pressing distance.

This gamepad has the standard action buttons (x, circle, circle, square and triangle), as well as the quick menu access buttons typical of all playstation4 gamepads (Share, Options and PS4). The touchpad is engraved with the Razer logo and below it we have 2 LEDs that indicate if we are using some of the 2 profiles that we can save for the reprogrammable buttons, which we are going to talk about a little later.

The joysticks are located in the same area as the official Dualshock 4 controller, something that helps to easily familiarize yourself with the gamepad control.

We get to the triggers, and this is where the good stuff starts. For starters, the size of the L1, L2, R1 and R2 buttons is noticeably larger than those on the original controller, which makes it easier to press and gives the gamepad an attractive look and makes pressing them more comfortable.

These triggers have the ability to activate a stop stop so that the trigger travel is shorter. This is a great advantage in multiplayer shooters, as it allows you to shoot faster by having less travel and this can mean victory in a melee as you can shoot more times in less time.

In addition to the standard triggers, it also comes with 4 additional triggers; 2 on the top area and 2 on the rear area, which are remappable by any of the standard buttons. This is another great advantage for multiplayer games.

The thing here is that on standard gamepads, when we have to press any button we have to lift the thumb of the joystick (either one) and press that button, so we can’t control the direction of the camera or the direction of our character and press a button.

To clarify this I give you an example;

In a shooter you can’t jump and aim at the same time with a standard controller, but if you have a competitive controller, you map the jump button to the rear trigger and you can jump while aiming. This is an action that until recently only keyboard and mouse players could do.

It should also be noted that the rear triggers (or levers) are removable, in case we do not need them. Process that we can do with the small screwdriver that comes in the case.

Rear area with the levers removed

This feature can be useful for those who are looking for a high quality controller but are not interested in theadvantages of the rear levers for competitive multiplayer, but still always have the extra triggers on top available.

Finally we have 4 configuration buttons located in the bottom area, in order:

  • Extra Button Mapping: Before pressing this button we have to choose in which profile we want to save (Change profile button). Then, this button allows us to choose one of the 4 extra triggers or levers and decide which button we want to map.
  • Profile change: We alternate between the two available profiles.
  • Mute microphone: We press it if we want the microphone plugged into the 3.5mm connector to be muted, in case we do not want to be heard. If the LED is illuminated it means that the microphone is deactivated.
  • Volume control: We can control the volume in several ways; Increase the overall volume, increase the chat volume and decrease the game volume and vice versa

This control panel allows us to quickly control some aspects that those of us who play online can use at certain times. For example, when taking a private phone call that we don’t want anyone to hear, or if we have a player on our team that we can’t hear very well. These quick access buttons simplify that process, an addition that is not the most, but that in my opinion adds points.

Ergonomics and connectivity

Razer is a company specialized in gaming, so it makes its products thinking about the most hardcore gamers, how they can get the most out of their devices and this is a good example, since the design of the controller resembles the XBOX ONE controllers, which is a very positive aspect since these gamepads are gripped in a very comfortable way.

As for connectivity, it is a controller that needs to be connected by USB cable, the good thing is that it measures 3 meters so it gives you a great margin to move around the room. It also comes with a 3.5mm jack for connecting headphones with microphone.

In addition, the controller is lined in the grip area with a non-slip rubber that is very useful for gamers with sweaty hands. This may seem silly, but when you’re in the final stage of a Fortnite game (for example) head-to-head with a player who has a good level, or you’re in a competition, getting sweaty hands can be something that happens to 99% of players.

This utility also comes with the joystick rubbers, which I have not been able to show in the photos, but if you want to make sure you can check that they are in the video presentation of the controller at the top of article.

To finish this section, comment that the materials with which this controller has been built denote a sense of quality that does nothing but strengthen the level of Razer when it comes to presenting us with a first class peripherals.

Feelings that the Razer Raiju leaves us with

To conclude, what I can say about the Razer Raiju is that it is a controller that at first glance has an aspect of robustness that generates confidence, and when you pick it up you can feel it.

One aspect I haven’t mentioned yet is that it is an official Playstation licensed product, which means 100% compatibility with all of their games. This may seem silly, but it is an aspect that denotes professionalism and quality assurance.

Another issue that we can not overlook is the INPUT LAG, which is the time from the moment you press a button until the command is executed on the console, and is that this controller can only be used by cable, which prevents you from moving freely, but forces you to have a low input lag, which is a great advantage in multiplayer competitions, plus it is also quite noticeable in the gameplay.

The fact that you can remap the buttons with the controller itself greatly simplifies this task, as there are other controllers that require software, which if on the one hand may give more configuration possibilities, on the other hand makes the task more tedious. With the Razer Raiju in a couple of clicks you have it ready.

In conclusion, we can say that this is a great competitive controller.
