At The Controller Guide we are going a step further and have started to do more detailed reviews of some products that may be of interest to the gamer community.
For me this community includes both PC gamers and console gamers, including myself, who also spend long hours of gaming and may be interested in investing in devices that make us enjoy more of that time.
Today we are in front of the Nacon Revolution V3 Pro Controller, the third version of the PS4 competitive controllers from Nacon that comes with a sober design in black color and a high quality finish that gives us the possibility of having a gamepad with asymmetric joysticks like the ones they have on XBOX, plus other extras such as rear buttons or button mapping. This controller comes with the official PS4 license and is also compatible with Windows.
The presentation of any product says a lot about the quality standards of a brand, and in this case Nacon has surprised me with the level of care that has been used with this product in which the unboxing is a statement of intent.
If we get one of these controllers, inside the box we will find the hard carrying case and a mini guide to the basics of the controller.
The inside of the case holds the gamepad, an anti-dust cloth, the 3-meter USB-C cable and the set of 6 weights to modify the weight of our controller. There are 2 weights of 10g, 2 of 14g and 2 of 16g.
Buttons and Joysticks
As for the buttons, we can see the standard action buttons (x, square, triangle and circle), the crosshead, the menu buttons + touchpad, the 4 regulatory triggers and the 4 customizable back buttons, which are what make this controller play in the competitive league.
Below the touchpad we find 4 LEDS that indicate which button profile we are in.
In principle, the feel of these buttons is similar to those of the Dualshock 4, with a smooth and reliable press, except for the L1 and R1 buttons that have digital switches and the press is more similar to the mouse buttons, which leaves us a feeling of a faster and more accurate press.
Another main feature of the controller is that the joysticks are asymmetrical, giving an attractive and distinct design. This makes the left thumb position more natural, which is a big plus.
In addition, both the standard buttons and joysticks on this controller are slightly larger than standard controllers, which makes them easier to use once you get used to them.
Another highlight of the controller are the 4 rear buttons, which give you the advantage of being able to perform any action without lifting your thumbs from the joystick, such as changing gears in a racing game or jumping and shooting at the same time in a shooter.
These extra buttons are very useful but you have to know that if you are not used to using back buttons, you will have to go through a learning process that may take a few days until you get used to pressing the buttons with the middle and/or ring finger.
In the rear area there is a profile selector, which varies depending on the buttons we assign to the 4 rear buttons. Saving a new profile is a very simple task that we can do simply with a combination of keys, without using the software, which allows us to do many other things besides mapping.
It also has a mode selection that allows us to switch between PS4, PS4 Advanced and PC.
- PS4 Mode: It does not take into account the extra settings that have been made in the application, which we will talk about later.
- PS4 Advanced mode: It does take into account the previously mentioned settings.
- PC Mode: Enables the X-Input functionality to be able to play with the Nacon Revolution Pro Controller 3 on the computer.
The feature that most differentiates this custom controller from others, apart from the asymmetric joysticks is the high degree of customization that we have of the operation of this gamepad through the Software.
Next let’s see what we can customize in the Revolution V3 Pro controller.
We can choose what colors will have the ring that surrounds the right joystick, and how it will be illuminated; by bursts or linearly among other options, all a touch of quality that I personally love.
Another reason why this is a highly customizable controller is the button remapping. Through the software you can choose what action each button performs, for example making the circle the R1
Normally, competitive controllers let you remap only the extra buttons, but in this case we can remap all buttons except for the Share, Options and PS buttons.
Another quality aspect of the controller are the vibration motors, to which we can adjust the intensity from the software, even disable them.
The joysticks and triggers are the buttons of the controller that have travel and with this program we can modify the sensitivity with which they are activated. The level of customization is such that we can even edit the sensitivity curve according to the joystick inclination.
By default, all gamepads have what is called the dead zone, which makes the first stretch of travel of the joysticks or triggers do not activate the movement, just in case we have touched it by mistake, but competitive players eliminate these areas, which we can do with this software.
The operation of the crosshead can also be modified so that there are diagonal movements or not. In this way you will take better advantage of some retro style games or others in which you need the crosshead to scroll through grid style menus.
If we want to test how the controller responds to all the modifications we have made we have a simple click a test area to adjust all the features, to reach the point where we feel more comfortable.
All these modifications mentioned above are saved in profiles, which we can import from a member of the community, export to share or load in our controller.
By default there are 4 predefined profiles: Neutral, FPS sensitive right stick, FPS Pro very sensitive right stick and Arcade immediate stick reaction.
Ergonomics, design and connectivity
The Nacon Revolution v3 Pro Controller is built with high quality materials, as soon as you pick it up you can notice it, and the surface of the grip area is lined with a very useful anti-slip material to prevent it from slipping.
One more aspect that makes this gamepad a quality and different device is the rear compartment where we will put the weights with which we feel more comfortable.
The grip is an important issue that you must take into account, I explain. This controller has a different ergonomics to the rest, so at first you may feel a little out of place with the position of the buttons, but if you get a Revolution v3 knowing this and you put a few hours of practice you will end up feeling like a fish in water with the controls.
Finally, it is obvious that we are facing a very nice controller with an attractive design to the point that it can be an element of the decoration of our beloved gamer set-up.
Feelings that the controller has left me
Finally, Nacon is gradually polishing the versions of their controllers and in this third Revolution we find some of these improvements, such as the crosshead, joysticks or rear buttons among others.
If it is true that at first you may find a high difficulty curve to get used to the position of the buttons and the way to grip the controller, but you have to think that if you come from a Dualshock 4 with which you have spent countless hours, this controller need some time to adapt.
- High customization
- High quality components
- Official Playstation license
- Only works by cable
- Needs some time to adapt to the controls
